DeepMind’s Discovery “Large Language Models(LLMs) Beat Human Mathematicians On Unsolved Problem”

AI researchers at Google DeepMind have achieved a significant breakthrough using a large language model (LLM), demonstrating for the first time that such technology can generate new scientific knowledge. This discovery, led by Pushmeet Kohli, involved the development of "FunSearch," a system where an LLM creates computer programs to solve complex problems.

FunSearch was tested on two mathematical challenges: the cap set problem and the bin packing problem. In both instances, the AI-generated solutions exceeded existing human-derived methods. This marks a significant leap in AI capabilities, suggesting new potential for human-machine collaboration in scientific and algorithmic problem-solving.

While currently limited to problems with automatically verifiable solutions, this advancement represents a transformative step in the field of AI, showing that LLMs can do more than process existing information and can actively contribute to scientific discovery.

OpenAI’s Strategies To Control Superhuman AI

OpenAI's Superalignment team, created in July 2023, focuses on controlling and governing AI systems that are significantly more intelligent than humans. Led by co-founder Ilya Sutskever, the team explores how to align AI models that surpass human intelligence, a challenge since current methodologies primarily work for AI at or below human-level intelligence.

The team aims to develop governance frameworks for future powerful AI systems, using weaker AI models to guide more advanced models, analogous to a sixth-grader directing a college student. This setup is useful for testing hypotheses about controlling superintelligent AI. A crucial part of their research involves addressing AI hallucinations, where models distinguish between fact and fiction.

OpenAI acknowledges the limitations of this approach and is inviting broader participation through a $10 million grant program.Funding for this program includes contributions from Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO, known for his active investments in AI and his warnings about the potential dangers of AI systems. OpenAI plans to host an academic conference on superalignment in 2025 and has committed to sharing its research and the work of grant recipients publicly, aligning with its mission to ensure AI safety and benefit for humanity.

Intel unveils new AI chip to compete with Nvidia and AMD

Intel has launched new computer chips, including the Gaudi3 AI chip targeting generative AI, to compete with Nvidia and AMD. Set for a 2024 release, Gaudi3 aims to challenge Nvidia's H100 and AMD's upcoming MI300X chips in the AI market.

Intel also unveiled Core Ultra chips for Windows laptops and PCs, and fifth-generation Xeon server chips, all featuring AI-enhancing NPUs. The Core Ultra chips, optimized for efficiency and gaming, support advanced features like Zoom's background blurring and are available in laptops from December 14, 2023. The fifth-generation Xeon processors, designed for large organizations and cloud services, excel in AI model inferencing and are often paired with Nvidia GPUs for AI applications.

These releases underscore Intel's strategic emphasis on AI technology and its growing market demand.

Instagram releases new AI Editing Tool

Instagram has recently introduced a new generative AI-powered background editing tool for its users in the United States. This feature allows Instagram users to change the background of their images using prompts, particularly for Stories. When users select the background editor icon on an image, they are presented with ready-made prompts like “On a red carpet,” “Being chased by dinosaurs,” and “Surrounded by puppies.” Additionally, users have the option to write their own prompts to customize the background.

This new tool enhances user interaction by including a “Try it” sticker on Stories that use the newly generated background. This sticker allows other users to engage with the image generation tool themselves.

Instagram's launch of this AI-powered background editor is part of a broader trend in social media platforms incorporating AI into their features. For example, earlier this week, Snapchat introduced a tool for its paying users that enables them to create and send AI-generated images.
