Google Delays Gemini AI Launch Until January 2024

Google's big AI push led to combining two AI teams, Brain and DeepMind, into one team to work on the new Gemini AI model to compete with OpenAI's GPT-4. Today, Google has announced a delay in launching its highly anticipated LLM, Gemini AI.

The launch, scheduled for next week with a series of events across California, New York, and Washington, has now been pushed to January 2024. CEO Sundar Pichai decided to delay the launch after Google "found the AI didn't reliably handle some non-English queries." Gemini AI stands out for its comprehensive support for global languages, especially in handling non-English queries. Google is committed to refining this aspect, which could potentially give Gemini an edge over GPT-4.

The model's multimodal capabilities, highlighted at Google I/O, mark a significant advancement, extending beyond text and image understanding to include efficient tools and API integrations beneficial for third-party developers. Google envisions multiple versions of Gemini, including the mobile-friendly "Gecko."

The looming question remains: when will Google officially launch Gemini and integrate into Google's array of services, including Bard, Search, and Workspace?

OpenAI to Buy $51M in AI Chips from CEO Sam Altman's-Backed Startup “Rain”

OpenAI has signed a letter of intent to purchase $51 million worth of AI chips from Rain, a startup backed by OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, who also made a personal investment in the company. Rain, situated near OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters, is working on developing a neuromorphic processing unit (NPU) that mimics human brain functions. This agreement, dating back to 2019, underscores OpenAI's efforts to secure advanced chip technology for its AI projects amidst a global shortage and high costs of AI chips. The deal also highlights the potential conflict of interest concerns due to Altman's investment in Rain. Rain, which has undergone leadership changes and faced U.S. government intervention regarding foreign investment, aims to deliver its first hardware by next year. The company's NPUs are expected to offer significant improvements in computing power and energy efficiency compared to current GPUs, predominantly sourced from Nvidia.

EY’s AI Audit Success

EY, a prominent member of the Big Four accounting firms, recently tested an AI system for detecting fraud in audits. The trial showed promising results, with the AI system successfully identifying fraudulent activities in two out of ten companies during initial tests. While promising, AI's use in auditing has sparked industry debate. Concerns include AI's ability to identify complex frauds, data privacy, and input data quality. Firms like Deloitte and KPMG are skeptical, viewing AI as better for routine tasks than complex fraud detection. The regulatory perspective is also a critical factor in determining the future role of AI in auditing, emphasizing the need for auditors to have a deep understanding of AI tools and to ensure their use complies with industry standards.
