Now, let's delve into the most recent AI Drops...

Sam Altman Reclaims CEO Title Amidst OpenAI Shake-Up

In a surprising reversal, Sam Altman has been reappointed as the CEO of OpenAI after a tumultuous week that saw him ousted from the position. The reinstatement comes with a revamped board featuring new members, including Bret Taylor, former chair of Twitter’s board; Larry Summers, the Clinton-era U.S. treasury secretary; and Adam D’Angelo, CEO of Quora.

The new OpenAI board, though not fully constituted, marks a shift from an academic to a corporate-heavy lineup, signaling a potential strategic pivot. Notable departures from the board include Helen Toner, Tasha McCauley, and Ilya Sutskever, who along with D’Angelo, initially moved to remove Altman.

Negotiations are reportedly underway to install representation from Microsoft, which has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI

Open AI’s Project Q*

Numerous speculations and whispers are circulating about the reasons for the board's abrupt action against Altman. It seems that the trigger was a letter from a group of employees to the board, alerting them to a significant breakthrough in artificial intelligence that might pose a risk to human safety. At the APEC CEO Summit, Altman alluded to this recent advancement.

This innovation, known as Q*, is believed by some to represent a major step forward in the organization's pursuit of superintelligence or artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a level of AI that exceeds human cognitive capabilities, as characterized by OpenAI.

The groundbreaking development, driven by OpenAI's Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, has sparked concern among some employees regarding the company's readiness to safely commercialize such advanced AI models.

The lack of silence from the OpenAI, has only deepened the intrigue around Q* and what it might mean for the future of AI.

Google's Bard AI Enhances YouTube Video Understanding

Google's Bard AI chatbot now offers an advanced level of interaction with YouTube videos, providing specific answers about the video content.

  • Current limitation is that it need specific prompts to get accurate information.

Reflection: The latest Bard AI capabilities mark a progressive shift in our interaction with video content, enabling a more analytical and participatory approach that could redefine learning and entertainment on digital platforms. While convenient for users, it raises concerns about the impact on content creators, particularly those who monetize content behind paywalls or through ad views.

Latest AI Study, AI-Generated Faces Perceived Real!

In an experiment involving 124 participants, it was found that people mistook AI-generated faces of white people as real 66% of the time, compared to 51% for actual human faces. This occurrence is referred to as "AI hyperrealism."

The research was conducted by a team of psychologists from the Australian National University, the University of Toronto, the University College London, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Aberdeen. It highlighted the potential implications for fraud detection. It also noted that AI-generated images of people of color did not have the same level of perceived realism, possibly due to training algorithms predominantly on images of white people. This bias could lead to skewed scientific conclusions and social biases.

A secondary experiment asked 610 participants to evaluate faces based on various attributes. The results indicated that proportionality, familiarity, and a lack of memorability were key factors in mistaking AI faces for human ones.

The findings were published in the journal Psychological Science and underscores the complexities in the intersection of AI, perception, and race.
